Running: Home to 1st - Tagging the Base

This short distance running drill helps the players concentrate on tagging first base, running past the bag, and looking for a missed throw.

Equipment: Base, cone.

Procedure: Place a cone about 2 strides past first base just off the foul line. The players line up about 20 feet to the homeplate side of first, on the foul line. Each player should run full speed, tag the base without jumping at it. She should not slow down until he has reached the cone. She should slow down by chopping her feet.

As the runner is slowing down, she should look to the right. She may be able to see the ball if it has gotten by the first baseman. The runner should stay on the foul line. When the player is stopped, she should turn to the right and return to first base. The coach may add to this drill by throwing a ball behind the runner. If the runner sees the ball, she should turn and run to second.
