The following running drills can be used as warm-ups for practices and pregame routines.
Line up in groups of 4 or 5 . (Repeat each drill at 4 times).
Run: run straight ahead at 3/4 speed. Concentrate on your arm swing. Run at 3/4 speed accelerate to full speed and then slow down (about 30 yds.).
Shuffle: move sideways by sliding your right foot out and following with your left foot. Avoid hitting your feet together or crossing your feet. Keep your shoulders level and facing homeplate.
Breaking from the base using a cross over step: lead off from the base. You'll be standing with your feet parallel to the base next to you. Swing your left leg over towards your right to start a run towards another base. Run to the other base. Do no turn or swivel your feet and run to the next base.
Breaking from the base in a sprinter's stance: keep your left foot on base, your right foot should be behind the base facing the next base. Run to the next base.
Tag up and go: runners should shuffle 3 to 4 times and then return to an imaginary base. Put their left foot on the base and look towards the outfield. They will then run on your command of "go".
